A Portland community tradition continues Saturday with the 29th annual Portland Day celebration.
This year's gathering at the Portland Community Building, located on Main Cross Street, will consist mainly of a carry-in potluck dinner starting at 1 p.m.
"This year is going to be rather quiet," said Carolyn Leeper, treasurer of the Portland Community Center's board of directors. "We usually arrange some entertainment. This year the entertainment will just be visiting with friends."
Of course, visiting with friends is the whole purpose of Portland Day - a sort of Portland family reunion - to begin with.
"It's just a good opportunity to get acquainted with people in the community and have fellowship with your neighbors," Leeper said. "As busy as people are these days, it's kind of nice to realize who your local friends and neighbors are."
