Woodmen to host free family fun day

Local chapter seeks to increase profile

"Play games. Eat some food. Have fun. Make new friends."

So reads a flier handed out during the Callaway Youth Expo last week in Auxvasse.

In an attempt to increase their exposure, the local chapter of Woodmen of the World is hosting a free Family and Friends Day from 3-7 p.m. Saturday at its lodge on County Road 278 near Millersburg.

"Nobody seems to know who we are and we're trying to get the word out," Sally Davison said of the group's decision to invite the public out to its 40-acre site for an afternoon of games and fellowship. "We're going to have baseball, softball, volleyball, a catch game for the little kids and we've got a great pond for fishing."

There also will be frog jumping contests if children bring their own frogs. Food provided will include hot dogs, chips and homemade cookies. Davison said attendees are welcome to bring their own side dish if they like, and are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.

A life insurance society based out of Omaha, Neb., Davison said Woodemn also is a group that seeks to be active in the community.
