Snow knocks out power for 6,300 in Callaway

Approximately 6,300 Callaway Electric Cooperative customers were left without power for a prolonged period of time following a wet, heavy snowfall Tuesday.

"That's about our peak," said Cooperative Manager of Administration Clint Smith. The Cooperative had been getting calls since Tuesday morning. "We have eight different crews from other cooperatives plus our own helping us, so that's about 40 linemen total."

Cooperative Manager of Administration Clint Smith said that the outages were caused by what was known as "bucking," where snow falls off power lines and causes them to sway into one another, where they become tangled and short.

"We don't have any big structural damage; it's snow falling off the lines," he said. "We only had one pole broken. We have 125 separate outages and are visiting them and turning them back on."
