Fake $100 bills circulating in northern Callaway, Audrain counties

United Security Bank in Auxvasse warns customers and business-owners of reported counterfeit $100 bills that have circulated there and in Mexico and Vandalia Monday.

Bank officials said that about seven or eight counterfeit bills, all with the serial number J11199867 A, have been passed or attempted to pass there. Marker tests demonstrate the bills to be counterfeit.

Fulton Police Department Major Roger Rice said that counterfeits with the same serial number are common because they're all printed from the same blank. Rice added that his agency had not yet heard of any fake bills passed in Fulton.

"Hundreds are a little more rare," said Rice. "Most of the time counterfeits are generally $20s, because they're easier to pass. $20s are a lot more common, and there are some smaller merchants who don't even take a $100 because they don't have the change to make it."

Those who encounters questionable bills are encouraged to contact their local law enforcement agencies.
