Property tax deadline looms

Pam Oestreich (right), Callaway County collector, looks through receipts for Vicki Staudenmeyer, of Williamsburg, Monday after Staudenmeyer paid her taxes at the collector's office located inside the county courthouse. Oestreich, who has been the county collector since 1999, said many people typically pay their taxes the day before New Year's Eve. On Monday around 10 a.m., Oestreich said a line formed out of the collector's office and into the Callaway County Courthouse lobby, and estimated the office had taken more than $600,000 over the counter on Monday. The collector's office will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today. After 5 p.m., people can put their payment in a drop box outside of the courthouse. Oestreich said she will pick up those payments at midnight, and anything past that time must have January penalty and interest. She added people can also send payment through the mail and must include a December time stamp to prevent January penalty and interest.
