Wellsville North Callaway senior guard Jaida Gray connected for a game-high 18 points, including two 3-pointers, as the Ladybirds humbled Wellsville 62-30 in Eastern Missouri Conference play Thursday night.
Senior forward Maddie Sorell also chipped in with 12 points and a team-high six rebounds for North Callaway, which moved to 7-1 on the season and 2-0 in the EMO. Junior guard Elaine Brinker provided nine points and led the Ladybirds with seven assists.
North Callaway was in charge from the outset, bolting to a 20-4 advantage after one quarter. The Ladybirds carried a 36-15 lead into halftime and then outscored the Lady Tigers 21-6 in the third quarter to widen the margin to 57-21.
“We played good defense early on, came up with a lot of steals and turned them over quite a bit — which led to easy buckets out of transition,” North Callaway head coach Matt Miller said. “We also had a lot of second-chance points.”
Jordan Kellogg paced Wellsville (1-6, 1-1) with 12 points and Taylor Mayes was next with 11.
The Ladybirds (2-4) blanked the Lady Tigers 18-0 in the second half in rolling to a 35-5 triumph in the junior varsity game. Sophomore guard Maddie Ausfahl and freshman forward Taylor Wilson shared team scoring honors with eight points apiece.
North Callaway hosts four games with Southern Boone on Tuesday, Dec. 30. The JV girls tip off at 3 p.m., followed by the JV boys and the varsity girls and boys.
