Vegas comes to Auxvasse

School PTO Carnival to raise funds for playground, library

A slice of Auxvasse will be the brightest city on Earth for the evening Sept. 22.

Auxvasse Elementary will host its annual Parent Teacher Organization Carnival 4-9 p.m. at the school. This year's theme is "A Night in Vegas," and will fund needed renovations to the school's playground, new computer equipment and other educational supplements.

Auxvasse Elementary Principal Susan McNeal said both the playground and computer projects were overdue.

"One of our main goals is to help refurbish the playground," she said. "We had applied for a DNR grant and part of the funds is to put concrete underneath (the playground) so we can put recycled tire piles on top. The other part will go for technology; a lot of our computers are well over five years old, and they are fully dying on us, so we will replace those that are dying."

McNeal said any leftover funds would purchase instructional resources such as reading books for classrooms and the library and math manipulatives, but playground safety was the top priority.

"Our playground has some gray areas to it; it definitely needs to be safer."
