SCHS to host country western fundraiser to buy new sound equipment

South Callaway High School's theatre department is teaming up with an area entertainment company, Cruise King Entertainment, to put on a show and improve the school's auditorium.

Rhinestones and Sequins, a country and western show, will take place Saturday, Sept. 15 at the school. The event will kick off at 5 p.m. with a spaghetti dinner in the high school commons before moving to the auditorium at 7 p.m., where 11 SoCal High School girls and five Cruise King entertainers will perform a set of country western hits ranging from Johnny Cash to Taylor Swift.

Theatre director Mary Van Orden got the idea when she heard that Cruise King Entertainment earned around $1,900 for Harrisburg High School in a similar event. Van Orden hopes a similar night could purchase new microphones, speakers or amplifiers for school productions and events in the auditorium.

"It's not loud enough and it's poor quality," Van Orden said. "We had a packed house for "The Miracle Worker' last spring and got wonderful reviews from people coming out of the door, but a lot of people were saying "gee, we wish we could have heard better in the back rows.'"
