The victim of the robbery and beating is Sara L. Spencer, 52, of Fulton, who is in serious condition at a Columbia hospital.

Police reported Carter has been charged with one count of kidnapping, robbery first degree and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Fulton Police Maj. Roger Rice said the abduction in the Fulton Walmart parking lot was captured on video by the store's security cameras on the parking lot.

"The video shows this obviously was a random abduction and robbery. We believe there was no previous connection between the two women. The suspect was waiting for the right victim. The video shows they actually passed each other and there was no recognition between them and they did not speak. The suspect at that point turned around and followed the victim to her car. There was no connection whatsoever. The motive was clearly robbery," Rice said.

Rice said Carter forced Spencer, who works at Fulton State Hospital, on Friday night to drive her Honda CRV to a bank automatic teller machine and ordered her to withdraw money from the machine.

The next day, Rice said police at 10:28 a.m. Saturday received a call from a citizen reporting a bleeding man lying in a ditch on County Road 210 just north of Fulton and just west of U.S. 54.
