Ladybirds flourishing with two-coach approach

Baumgartner, Thomsen guide North Callaway into district play tonight

Appointed as co-head coaches of the North Callaway Ladybirds softball team, Brandi Thomsen and Sarah Baumgartner gathered their returning players over the summer to discuss what was what.

How would the ship ride with two captains at the helm instead of one?

"We discussed what it was and what co-head coaches were, and what we told them is that you don't have anyone that's going to be nice," Thomsen said before practice Tuesday afternoon. "When you have an assistant coach, you have that one coach that is going to be nice to you, but neither of us have that type of personality.

"Do what you're supposed to do when you're supposed to do it."

What Baumgartner and Thomsen - both former players at Missouri - have done is lead North Callaway to a nine-win turnaround from a year ago.

They directed the Ladybirds to an Eastern Missouri Conference tournament title this past weekend and a No. 3 seed in the Class 3, District 7 Tournament at Wright City. North Callaway will face No. 6 Wright City at 6 tonight.
