Our House to benefit from Beks fundraiser dinner

Beks Restaurant in downtown Fulton will host a special fundraiser holiday dinner and silent auction Dec. 9 to benefit Our House: Caring for Callaway's Homeless.

Seating is at 5 and 6:30 p.m. for the traditional holiday dinner, made up of ham, turkey, fixings and dessert. Tickets cost $35, and are available at Beks, Bank Star One and the Chamber of Commerce.

The event will help the cash-strapped organization dedicated to operating the county's family-based and emergency overnight shelters, Haven House and Wiley House for the county's homeless. Wiley House was almost closed earlier this year due to budgetary restraints before paid staff agreed to work as volunteers to keep their doors open.

Our House Director Brad Sheppard said that this marked the first time Our House held such a fundraiser, and they wanted to do a holiday theme to fit with the season.

"We're a United Way agency, and in the past their campaign went to the end of the year, so that precluded doing anything," said Sheppard. "Now it ends in November and frees up December to do fundraising, so we thought "we'll take advantage of that.'"

Sheppard said he approached Garry and Rebekah Vaught, owners of Beks, with the plan in spring, and the restaurateurs have been more than generous with their help, noting that they worked to procure as much of the food as they could for free to cut overhead and ensure money goes back to Our House.
