Youths bag 345 deer in Callaway

Fifth highest total in state

Youngsters participating in the special youth deer hunt last weekend resulted in the harvest of 345 deer in Callaway County, the fifth highest county number of deer taken in the two-day youth hunt.

Hunters age 6 through 15 were permitted to hunt in the special season before the regular adult hunter deer firearms season starts this weekend. The regular firearms deer season this year is from Nov. 10 through Nov. 20. It normally accounts for 80 percent of the state's firearms deer harvest.

Callaway County ranked fifth in the state in the number of deer harvested by youngsters. The top five counties were Franklin, 417; Osage, 400; Howell, 395; Gasconade, 357; and Callaway, 345.
