Youths bag 345 deer in Callaway

Fifth highest total in state

Youngsters participating in the special youth deer hunt last weekend resulted in the harvest of 345 deer in Callaway County, the fifth highest county number of deer taken in the two-day youth hunt.

Hunters age 6 through 15 were permitted to hunt in the special season before the regular adult hunter deer firearms season starts this weekend. The regular firearms deer season this year is from Nov. 10 through Nov. 20. It normally accounts for 80 percent of the state’s firearms deer harvest.

Callaway County ranked fifth in the state in the number of deer harvested by youngsters. The top five counties were Franklin, 417; Osage, 400; Howell, 395; Gasconade, 357; and Callaway, 345.

Does anyone teach their children to value life anymore? What a sad world we live in where murder is condoned.

Murder??? I take it you are a vegetarian? You do realize that you are killing the plants you eat. It would be different if this article states that they kill and leave it lay but it does not. The circle of life continues on.

Animals eat other animals, does that make them murderers?

May Shane hit every deer that the rest of us might while driving. People are injured and then spend a lot of money to recover. I would put my trust in the state wildlife dept. Shane; not so much.

Nature sorts itself out. It doesn't need our help. Furthermore, our level of consciousness is greater than that of other animals. What they do to each other is irrelevant. We're in a position to be better than that; to show compassion. I'm sure you're all familiar with the concept, as I know that the word appears in the 'holy' bible.

And whocares, you can't compare plant life to animal life in this discussion. If you truly think that you've made a rational point, maybe you should repeat third grade again this year.

Wait why doesn't what whocares say make sense? Plants are living creatures, they have cells, they grow and reproduce just like all animals. They only move slowly and don't seem to communicate but we can't be sure that they don't communicate. Maybe someone should stand up for plants rights!

@rock1853 While that's a lovely prayer, I drive slow at night. Proud to say I've never come close to hitting a deer. If I did, however, it would be unfortunate. My condolences to the families of any deer who have lost their lives thanks to careless drivers.

The problem is we have messed with nature and have created some animal populations that are out of balance. Without hunters to harvest an over population of deer the problem would be much greater. I sincerely hope that none of you hit a deer (or anything else) because that is nothing but a lose lose situation. Please don't let your dogs run loose in the woods for a few days or you may not see them again and if you are walking in the woods wear Orange or Red. Stay safe.

Just a "heads" up do NOT wear red in the woods. THe last I heard the conservation department advises against this color since turkey heads are red.

I stand corrected. No one wants to look like a turkey head. :>)

Shane says "I'm sure you're all familiar with the concept, as I know that the word appears in the 'holy' bible."

Not sure why you used quotations around the word holy here, maybe you were poking fun at christian beliefs? Either way Jesus ate fish, made several references to fishing, asked the disciples to cast their nets along side their boat where they caught loads of fish. So I'm thinking Jesus feels the same way that most hunters do. Animals are here FOR human beings, they should be harvested quickly with minimal suffering, and they should be treated dignity and respect.

I'm probably not going to change your mind so I'll give up at this point. So you may have the last snide remark

give a man a fishing pole and he'll eat for a week. give him or her a snap card and they'll take advantage of the tax payer.

If we weren't supposed to eat animals they wouldn't be made out of meat.
