Family welcomes third generation of Eagle Scouts

For Dalton and Austin McBee, scouting is in their blood. The brothers will formally receive their Eagle Scout badges together Saturday, becoming the fourth and fifth McBee's in three generations to earn the honor.

Only two percent of Boy Scouts will go on to reach the coveted highest rank, and among the two million young men who have earned the honor since 1911 are Dalton and Austin McBee of Troop 50 in Fulton, along with their father, Steve, uncle Bob and grandfather Larry.

Even the brothers' grandmother, Marie McBee, has been involved with scouting for over 40 years, when her sons joined the group.

"We are a scouting family," said Marie McBee. "It's just unusual that you've got three generations of Eagle Scouts. I'm sure it's around someplace, but I don't know of any place or anybody right off my hand."

The Eagle Scout rank is bestowed upon Boy Scouts who have earned at least 21 merit badges and demonstrate Scout Spirit and have passed a board of review.

The qualifications must be met before a scout's 18th birthday, so Dalton, 21, has technically been an Eagle Scout for a while, but he held off on the formal induction until his brother, 18, could take part at the same time.

"A lot of it was dealing with time," said Dalton McBee. "I lived in Kansas City for almost four years going to school, and (Austin) was taking his time to get to Eagle whereas I rushed to it, so everything never lined up for the both of us to do it at the same time. We wanted the whole family there for the whole event, there are a lot of friends and family who helped us through it."
