Jefferson City schools music teacher resigns

Knehans still faces criminal trial

Christopher Knehans resigned Wednesday from the Jefferson City Public Schools, effective Saturday.

Knehans, 37, a band teacher at both Thomas Jefferson Middle School and Jefferson City High School, had been on paid leave since last September, when school district officials first heard he might be involved in an inappropriate relationship with a student.

The seven-member Board of Education unanimously accepted the resignation during a 15-minute closed session Wednesday morning.

Then they approved a resolution explaining their decision, saying they "determined that it is in the best interest of the District's students ... and all potential witnesses to avoid the necessity of a public hearing (and) the Board of Education has ensured that Mr. Christopher Knehans will no longer be eligible to teach in the State of Missouri."

The Cole County grand jury last October indicted Knehans on two counts of "sexual contact with a student," which is a Class D felony that carries a maximum four-year prison sentence.

But state law also requires a person to go onto the sex offender registry if convicted of the crime.

Knehans trial remained set for June 14 after his attorney briefly met with Judge Dan Wednesday morning.
