Y to host Healthy Callaway Day

There will be running, there will be hopping, there will be feats of strength and, most importantly - to the younger attendees, at least - there will be a bounce house.

The YMCA of Callaway County is hosting Healthy Callaway Day 2012 on April 14, with the intent of encouraging area residents to be more active.

Starting with a youth mile at 9 a.m. and a tot trot (approximately 100 meters) at 9:30 a.m., the event also will include free family activities from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., including an obstacle course, potato sack races and a bounce house.

Event organizer Bryan Beanland, the YMCA's wellness director, said the third annual Show of Strength Competition will begin at 10 a.m. also, with local competetors trying to outdo one another in feats of strength such as lifting 300-pound boxes and pushing heavy tires.

"There's going to be crazy, crazy stuff - it's just really neat to watch," said Beanland, himself a two-time world powerlifting champion.
