New Bloomfield The R-3 Board of Education Monday night approved a plan to operate summer school from May 29 to June 22 for junior and senior high students.
Susan Dockery, high school principal, said from 30 to 35 students have been identified as needing to attend summer school.
Superintendent David Tramel said summer school previously was funded by the state at twice the normal per-student rate but the state no longer does this. He said some schools have decided to drop summer school because of the decrease in state funding.
But Tramel recommended the board approve the summer school. “If it could keep just one student from dropping out, I believe it would be well worth the expense,” Tramel said.
Dockery said because of specialized summer school computer programs, one teacher can teach and supervise about 25 students. Dockery said far more junior high school students this year need to attend summer school in order to be promoted to the next grade.

All schools should offer a summer school program whether a student is falling behind or not. Summer school programs could help ALL students either progress or maintain their knowledge. In this day of the internet, the New Bloomfield school board should also set up a website for parents to be able to contact them. Some parents cannot attend meetings and the board seems to change dates sometimes and parents that can attend don't know when they are. Personally, I'd like to see school all year long with short breaks. I would also like to see the board acquire parent input into retaining a teacher or not and get rid of tenure.
