Ten years after her late father, Bill Backer, had the honor, Vicki Backer McDaniel has been named as the president of the 2013 Kingdom of Callaway Supper.
Although her nomination and election to the post at the end of Tuesday night's Kingdom Supper celebration were not a complete surprise, she acknowledged that "it was totally out of the blue" when she was notified ahead of time.
"When the committee came to see me, I thought they were looking for donations," McDaniel said, adding that it was an honor when she realized their true mission.
McDaniel, who grew up in Fulton and is an executive at Backer's Potato Chips, has been involved in a number of organizations over the years, including the Fulton Art League, the Presbyterian Manor Board, as an elder at First Presbyterian Church, as president of the Historic Preservation Commission, as president of the local Model T chapter, the Fulton Heritage Trust, the Kingdom of Callaway Historical Society and as president of the Auto World Museum Foundation.
Nomination committee member Bruce Harris said he thinks McDaniel is an appropriate addition to that list.
"Vicki has been around the county for almost all her life - she's part of an iconic family and a very successful business and we felt like she deserved the honor," Harris said. "I think she'll do a great, great job. I'm looking forward to the entertainment she puts together and her guest of honor."
