Larrell Montez Banks, 18, Fulton, is in Boone County Jail facing charges of second degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with a Sunday afternoon shooting death of a man in Columbia.
Columbia Police reported the shooting occurred shortly after 3 p.m. Sunday in the 300 block of 8th Street near Park Avenue in Columbia.
Police responded to a report that shots were fired. The shooting victim, Lamont Sargent, 39, was taken to a hospital and later died.
Columbia police stepped up patrols in the city about two weeks ago after a series of shooting incidents were reported.
Banks was scheduled to appear in Boone County Circuit Court today for a pre-trial conference on another shooting charge last year in Columbia.
In that incident, a juvenile in Banks' vehicle was taken into custody the next day after an April 5, 2011, shooting incident when a weapon was fired from Banks' vehicle. Banks turned himself in in May of last year to authorities and was then charged with shooting a firearm from a vehicle.
A jury trial before Boone County Circuit Judge Christine Carpenter for that shooting incident was scheduled to begin March 14 in Columbia.
