To continue to raise funds for their upcoming American Foundation for Suicide Prevention walk in October, a local group will be hosting a bowling tournament and raffle at Fulton Bowling Center.
Team Hope and Team Blake — two of the participants in the Oct. 14 Out of the Darkness Walk — will be hosting Bowling for AFSP 11:30 a.m. July 21. The entry fee is $15 per person, with four-person teams playing three games each. There is a $200 prize for the winning team.
April Wimmer with Team Hope is helping coordinate the event. She said that proceeds raised up to and during the Out of the Darkness event would return to area schools to benefit suicide prevention resources.
“It’s our first annual event; so far Team Hope has raised $100,” said Wimmer. “Our goal for this year’s walk is $25,000. We’re looking for sponsors in businesses who would like to do donations for the day of the walk ... or for raffle items.”
Bowling for AFSP will also feature a 50/50 drawing and a raffle, which so far includes Kansas City Royals vouchers and Callaway Raceway tickets. Local Out of the Darkness organizer Melody Seiger said the October event has one sponsor so far in the Missouri Suicide Prevention Project.

Thanks so much for doing this story it is a great cause.. Just a side note the Money raised from the event and the fundraising held through out the year half the money stays right here in central Missouri and that money will be used to put programs in schools that educate our students and educators about suicide and when it is time to get help.. The other half is used for reasearch projects at a national level to help understand the causes of suicide and how to better treat those mental illnesses that are related to depression and suicide.. Remember suicide is 100% preventable and by talking about and getting information out there about where to get help we can help prevent it. The money we raise will also be used for several out reach programs going to be offered in our community this year one is the International Survivors of Suicide day this day is to help those people who have lost someone to suicide to have an oppurtunity to heal and know they are not alone and to help them move forward and deal with those tough questions you ask yourself when you loose some one to suicide. We will be out asking bussinesses to sponsor the event. If as a bussiness you sponsor this AFSP will be giving you some advertising incentives and your bussiness will be on our walk T-shirts and mentioned in all of our walk activites throughout the year. This is the first year but suicide and mental illnesses is just as important as any other disease out there and it takes just as many lives in our teens and young adults than cancer or other diseases it is the 3rd leading cause of death now in our 10-24 year olds. It is the second in those aged 25-35.
