Farmers seek repairs on Missouri River levees

Grain farmers along the Missouri River are calling for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to speed up efforts to rebuild levees along the river.

Callaway County has a stake in the Corps' management of water levels along the river because the county's entire southern border fronts on the Missouri River, much of it in fertile river bottom land.

Peggy Smart of Smart Brothers Farms in Tebbetts said Wednesday she realizes the Corps also has to consider the wishes of fish and wildlife advocates along the river.

"I'm OK with that. Everybody enjoys recreation. But it seems fish and wildlife advocates have more pull with the Corps than anyone else. Many farmers along the river would like to see the Corps also consider their role in attempting to control flooding," Smart said.
