Board to accept letters of intent for open seat

The Fulton School Board formally accepted the resignation of member Linda Davis Wednesday night, leaving an opening on the board.

Starting today until 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 22, the board will be accepting letters of interest to help fill that vacancy in accordance with district policy.

“The board, in open session, will review the candidates’ letters ... during the (special) Feb. 22 meeting and the candidates will come before the board in open session at the March 7 meeting and make the appointment at the following meeting,” board president Scott King explained.

King suggested the candidates be allotted three to five minutes each during the March 7 meeting. Board member Rick Gohring added that he believed the board should develop questions for the candidates as well.

Whomever is appointed to Davis’ open seat will serve until the April 2013 election, at which time the spot will be up as a one-year position.

I don't know why the apparent pretense, because it is my understanding that a former board member is telling people that he/she has been offered the position. I really think that the position shouldn't be offered to anyone who came in last in an election. The voters spoke on this issue in the last election. Let's hope the total process is transparent. I would think that the board would want the support of the voters.
