Fulton rebounds, gets league win over Marshall

— Junior guard Dalton Horstmeier tied for a game-high 14 points, helping the Hornets chip away at a pair of 10-point second-half deficits for a North Central Missouri Conference win over the Marshall Owls on Friday night.

“We showed a lot of heart,” Fulton head coach Ryan Shaw said. “We didn’t get down on ourselves, took care of the ball and made our free throws.”

The Hornets (3-1, 1-0 NCMC) cut the first 10-point gap down to five at the end of the third quarter and trailed 38-33 as the final period started.

Sophomore forwards Sam Christensen and Devin Gibson scored 10 and nine points respectively for Fulton, coming off a 71-27 blowout loss to rival Mexico in the championship of the Montgomery County Tournament on Dec. 1.

“A lot of times, you can tell the character of a young team by how they bounce back from a game like that,” Shaw said. “We had our best practice of the season on Monday, then had three more and so I was really proud of how they bounced back after that loss last Saturday night.”
