AUXVASSE — Junior first baseman Maddie Sorell’s two-run double highlighted a five-run outburst in the bottom of the fifth inning Wednesday night, sparking the North Callaway Ladybirds to a 6-1 season-opening victory over Sturgeon.

The Ladybirds prevailed in the debut of Brandi Thomsen and Sarah (Stringer) Baumgartner — a North Callaway graduate — as co-head coaches. Thomsen, the wife of North Callaway superintendent Bryan Thomsen, and Baumgartner both played softball at the University of Missouri.
