Our House receives community grant

After a successful barbecue fundraiser Sunday afternoon, Our House: Caring for Callaway's Homeless received more good financial news Monday when the organization received a Wal-Mart Community Grant.

"We had applied for the grant in the spring, and we got a check for $500 today," said executive director Brad Sheppard.

He was also excited about the strong show of community support at Sunday afternoon's barbecue.

"We had a great turnout," he said. "We had a good, constant crowd the whole time."

Our House consists of two separate shelters: Haven House, which serves as temporary housing for families, and Wiley House, an overnight shelter for single adults.

Wiley House has 11 beds for men and eight for women, and Sheppard said the facility has been putting up an average of eight to 10 individuals per night.

"We're housing more people than ever before," he said.
