Blue Jays football team wins road, UMAC opener

MINNEAPOLIS - Westminster sophomore quarterback Scott Rodgers threw for a career-high 285 yards and five touchdowns in guiding the Blue Jays to a 36-26 road win over Northwestern College on Saturday. The win improved Westminster to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference.

Rodgers completed 24-of-30 passes without an interception and hit three different receivers with scoring passes. Senior running back Zain Gower scored on a 67-yard pass play. Gower caught three passes for 100 yards and ran 22 times for 41 yards.

Senior receiver Carl Givens caught 10 passes for 92 yards and two TDs, while junior receiver James Gladstone hauled in four passes for 40 yards and two scores.

The Blue Jays' offense racked up 373 yards while the defense stifled Northwestern for 257 yards and forced three turnovers. Westminster hosts UMAC foe Martin Luther at 1 p.m. next Saturday
