Blue Jays chosen to win SLIAC in coaches’ preseason poll

The Westminster College men’s basketball team has been picked to win the 2011-12 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship, according to the coaches’ preseason poll announced Wednesday.

Westminster received five first-place votes. The Blue Jays finished 17-10 overall in the 2010-11 season and won a share of their third SLIAC title. Matt Mitchell has a 171-160 overall record entering his 14th year as Westminster head coach.

The Blue Jays open the 2011-12 season against Rhodes at 5 p.m. Friday in the Hendrix Cliff Garrison Classic. Westminster finishes tournament play against host Hendrix at 5 p.m. Saturday.
