At age 78, Frank Hennessy, a master piano tuner known throughout the Midwest, will launch a new business during a grand opening Friday and Saturday this week in Millersburg.
Hennessy closed his piano store in Columbia last year, but has decided to open a new piano store in Callaway County at 3077 Lighthouse Lane in Millersburg.
The new shop is located across the street from Hazel Kinder’s Lighthouse Theater near the Millersburg exit off I-70.
Even after he closed his store in Columbia, Hennessy continued to tune pianos.
“Although I’m 78, I have no intention of retiring,” Hennessy said with a wry grin. “I’ve accumulated a lot of knowledge and experience over the years and I just can’t give it up.”
After most people tune a piano to the correct pitch, they’re finished. But not Hennessy. He adds several more steps. “I’m concerned about the tone of the piano. It’s possible to change the tone. It’s called voicing a piano. A lot of steps are involved. It’s complicated,” Hennessy said.
Hennessy also has gained fame for his ability to restore pianos. An article about his restoration and tuning expertise was distributed in June of 1996 by the Associated Press wire service and published by newspapers around the nation.
