Scouts, vets to retire flags with respect

On June 14, Boy Scout Troop 53 of Fulton will conduct a ceremony at Veteran's Park that local veteran and Fulton VFW Post 2657 officer Tom Maupin said everyone should see at least once.

At 6:30 p.m. on Flag Day, the troop - with support from the VFW - will hold a flag retirement ceremony to properly burn worn out American flags.

"I've never actually been involved with it, or witnessed," Maupin said, adding he believes this is the first time such a ceremony has actually been held at the park where the public may attend. "(People) ought to come out and participate because it's an opportunity to come out and see the young people do their thing and be patriotic. It's an exciting opportunity."
