Our Opinion: Salvation Army raises shield of protection

Throughout history, a shield has served as protection.

Throughout its history, which traces to 1865, the Salvation Army has protected people in need.

National The Salvation Army Week is being observed through Sunday. This year's theme is: "Be a Shield."

We commend the local Salvation Army volunteers for assisting the enhanced Christian ministry that provides spiritual solace in addition to offering meals, shelter, clothing and other services.

The Salvation Army has been an integral part of the local community since 1923. Through the years, it has attracted thousands of volunteers and forged valuable partnerships with Lincoln University, area churches and civic and social organizations.

Each day during the week-long observance, the Salvation Army will highlight a different aspect of its service, including: The Center of Hope; meal programs; Christmas assistance; social services; church ministries; the Lohman Prayer Garden; and the Family Thrift Store.

During fiscal year 2010, those local services provided more than 33,500 meals, nearly 13,000 lodging nights and about 300 personal comfort kits. In addition, nearly 200 dinners were served on Thanksgiving and more than 4,700 toys were distributed at Christmas.

"We want our community to realize our history, heritage and purpose of being a shield," said Maj. Kendall Mathews, regional coordinator. "We take up our shield in these areas of service to help provide meaningful services to people in need."

We encourage community members to consider volunteering to assist the mission of The Salvation Army.

A shield is no burden when supported by many hands.
