Lady Hornets open 2011 with a win under unusual circumstances

The Fulton Lady Hornets soccer team thought that Monday's season opener would be played in the friendly confines of its own home pitch. But wet weekend weather left the field in less than playable conditions, causing Fulton to make a last minute venue change to the the home field of its opponent, the Southern Boone Eagles.

But you'd never know that all this happened, since Fulton got the 2-0 opening win over Southern Boone on Monday night. The Lady Hornets (1-0) faced only three shots on goal while senior goaltender Liz Foreman shooed away six shots to get the shutout.

"It was an excellent team effort for our first game considering we had a last minute change of venue," Lady Hornets head coach Kati Wallace said.

Junior forward Lola Weiss got the first - and ultimately game-winning - goal at the 22 minute mark off the first half. The tally came off an assist from sophomore stopped Anna Fink.

A little over 20 minutes later, senior center midfielder Kara Henry scored unassisted at the 43 minute mark of the first half to finish off the scoring. In total, Fulton completed 15 shots on the goal of Southern Boone.

The Lady Hornets junior varsity team lost by the score of 2-0 to Southern Boone on Monday night. The varsity team will play again tonight at 5 when they host Montgomery County.
