SoCal tax levy to remain unchanged

— For the ninth consecutive year, the South Callaway R-2 School District Board of Education agreed unanimously Wednesday night to keep the district’s tax levy at $2.75 per $100 assessed valuation.

Superintendent Mary Lynn Battles told the board the levy is set at the highest possible rate without a vote of the patrons in the district.

Battles said the district is in sound financial condition. It anticipates revenue for the 2012 school year of $9.5 million and expenses of $9.3 million. “It probably will not be necessary to dip into our reserve fund,” Battles said.

She noted that unlike some school districts, most of the money financing the South Callaway district comes from local tax assessments, not state aid.
