The Downtown Barber Shop opened for business for the first time Monday morning at 7 West Fifth St. in downtown Fulton.

The new business is owned and operated by Brent Benn, a Fulton barber.

"I have five years of experience as a barber and I always wanted to start my own business. I have worked as a barber in Fulton, Columbia and Jefferson City," Benn said.

Benn said he has always worked for other people and now he is facing the challenge of operating his own business. The shop is the first business on Fifth Street west of the Finally Tammy's Restaurant in downtown Fulton.

The building already was set up as a barber shop before the previous owner moved to another location in Fulton. The rental space had been vacant for about six months.

Benn has decorated the shop with antique shaving mugs and brushes.

"It also has my fish mounted on the wall," Benn said. "I want everyone in Fulton to stop by the shop and meet me. I am charging only $10 for haircuts with a free neck shave. We will have a grand opening later on after we are open for awhile."

His brother, Adam Proesser, is a barber in Columbia. His sister, Brandi Wilson, is a cosmetologist in Mexico.

Benn said he hopes to add another barber to the Fulton shop soon but he wants to make sure there is sufficient business to justify another barber.

The Downtown Barber Shop is open every week from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
