New Bloomfield voters elect two new school board members

Two new members and one incumbent were elected Tuesday to the New Bloomfield R-3 Board of Education.

Two new members, Debbie Cuno and Craig Abbott, won first-time positions on the school board. Current board member Gracia Backer was re-elected.

Neither Abbott nor Cuno had previous experience on the board.

"I'm humbled by the support of the citizens of New Bloomfield. I'm looking forward to working with current members of the school board to make some positive change," Abbott said.

Six candidates squared off for three open positions for the New Bloomfield Board of Education.

Of the three openings on the board this year, two current members filed for re-election and one decided not to file for another term.

Board President Leroy Wade, who served on the board for 16 years, did not seek re-election.

The two current board members who filed for another three-year term were Backer and Suzie Mattern. Both were first elected to the board three years ago.

Mattern finished fifth in the six-way race for three positions on the board.

Patsy Suttles, a former New Bloomfield school teacher who served on the board for 11 years, finished fourth in the balloting.

Michele Heuman finished last in the six-way race.

The vote totals for the six candidates were:

Cuno, 363; Abbott, 328; Backer, 262; Suttles, 214; Mattern, 186; and Heuman, 76.
