Sports roundup

The Fulton Lady Hornets volleyball team suffered its first NCMC setback of the season with Tuesday night's 25-21, 19-25 and 25-22 loss to Hannibal.

Fulton, which captured the 2009 conference title with a perfect 10-0 mark, slipped to 14-2 overall and 4-1 in the North Central Missouri Conference after Tuesday night's loss.

"Hannibal had no holes on the floor," Lady Hornets head coach Megan Herrick said. "They cover incredibly well and their block was a wall. It felt like we were playing a team with 10 people on the court.

"It was rough and we have work to do, but now Hannibal has a target on their back and we'll be coming after them."

Sophomore setter Melissa Hoerber topped Fulton with 17 aces, while senior libero Emily Wefenstette contributed 29 digs. Junior middle hitter Corri Hamilton also supplied three solo blocks and sophomore right-side hitter Rachelle Miller had four aces.

The Lady Hornets (7-7) dropped the junior varsity match 25-14 and 25-15. Sophomore libero Allie Pierce finished with a team-high 10 digs and sophomore defensive specialist Kennedy Bailey chipped in with eight.

Fulton (4-4) bowed in the freshman match 25-21 and 25-15.

The Lady Hornets' varsity squad plays host Helias in the first round of the Helias Tournament at 8:30 a.m. Saturday in Jefferson City. Meanwhile, Fulton's junior varsity team squares off against Quincy, Ill., in the first round of the Hannibal Tournament at 8 a.m. Saturday.

"The ladies came out with lots of energy and kept it the entire game," Fulton head coach Laura Dooley said. "I am very proud of the way they played. They now know what they are capable of -- that is what we have been missing."
