McCarty takes 2nd in Class 3

Fulton sophomore Jenny McCarty keeps moving up at the state cross country championships.

McCarty finished second in the Class 3 girls' race Saturday at Oak Hill Golf Center, logging a time of 19 minutes, 31.67 seconds. She came in behind Hannibal senior Emma Burditt - a fellow North Central Missouri Conference runner - who captured the state title in 19:04.95.

As a freshman in 2009, McCarty medalled at the state championships with an eighth-place finish of 20:47.

McCarty was one of eight Callaway runners competing at the state meet Saturday.

In the Class 2 girls' race, South Callaway's Taylor Howard and Abbi Luebbert - a pair of freshmen and first-time qualifiers - finished 57th (22:05.88) and 65th (22:17.39), respectively.

North Callaway junior Jordan Gray, a three-time qualifier, came in 63rd in 22:10.55.

St. Paul Lutheran freshman Courtney Rogers claimed the Class 2 girls' championship with a time of 19:06.20.

In the Class 2 boys' race, North Callaway senior Grant Cundiff and junior Cullen Hudson placed 137th (19:58.85) and 151st (20:39.54), respectively. Cundiff and Hudson were both first-time qualifiers.

South Callaway freshman Tristan Peneston - another first-time qualifier - took 142nd in 20:07.20.

Kansas City St. Pius X senior Drew Keefer collected the Class 2 boys' title by clocking in at 16:07.01.

In the Class 1 girls' race, New Bloomfield junior Gwyna Gray - also a first-time qualifier - finished 68th in 23:55.17.

Midway junior Mackenzie Weis won the Class 1 girls' championship with a time of 19:24.91.
