Homeless man identified, autopsy to be performed Monday

Police Friday morning identified the body of a dead homeless man found Thursday in Fulton as John Alexander, 43, who was from the Fulton area.

Fulton Police Lt. Andre Cook said an investigation has not determined how long the body had been in a vacant lot near 101 E. 10th St. in Fulton.

"We are just waiting for results of the autopsy to tell us more," Cook said.

Dori Burke, a forensic investigator with the Boone County Medical Examiner's Office, said the autopsy will not be performed until Monday.

Police first were called to the scene Thursday when a passerby smelled something and reported a suspicious incident. Upon investigation, officers found Alexander's body under some brush.

Cook said there were no signs of foul play at the scene. He said the department is working on a tentative timeline, but still is unsure as to exactly how long Alexander's body had been there.

Burke could not be more specific either, although she noted "he was moderately to markedly decomposed."

Fulton police are continuing the investigation into the death.
