Area runners compete at district meets

The Bulldogs and T-Birds cross country teams competed in the Class 2, District 7 championships on Saturday. The T-Birds took sixth place in both the boys' and girls races while the Lady Bulldogs took fourth place.

Freshman Tristan Peneston topped all area boys runners finishing in 10th place with a time of 18:55 to qualify for the next weekend's state competition. The T-Birds had two state qualifiers of their own in junior Cullen Hudson and senior Grant Cundiff. Hudson and Cundiff took the final two state spots with their 14th and 15th place finishes, with Hudson crossing the finish line at 19:23, six seconds ahead of Cundiff's 19:29 time.

North Callaway sophomore David Wright finished in 27th place in a time of 20:37, followed by freshman teammate Adam Crawford's 20:45 30th place result. Junior's Ian Huddleston and Cody Pezold finished ten seconds apart at 21:58 and 22:08 to come in 40th and 43rd place

Sophomore Glen Healy was the final South Callaway finisher with a 46th place finish of 22:21 while North Callaway senior Caleb Floyd finished in 49th place at 22:37.

The girls race featured 46 runners, featuring two South Callaway state qualifiers. Freshman Taylor Howard finished in eighth place in a time of 22:29, two spots ahead of freshman teammate Abbi Luebbert's 10th place time of 22:46. North Callaway junior Jordan Gray qualified for state for the third consecutive year, finishing in 11th place with a time of 22:50.

South Callaway had a trio of runners finish just outside the state qualifications, led by freshman Andi Rodriquez's 24th place finish in a time of 24.02. Sophomore sisters Jaerie and Serina Booher were the next South Callaway finishers coming in 33rd and 34th place. Jaerie corssed the line at 27:18, 34 seconds ahead of sister Serina's 27:52 finish.

North Callaway junior Ashley Love came in 28th place in a time of 25:34. Sophomore teammate Miranda Deimekecame in 38th place at 30:43 and Ladybirds runners, senior Danielle Krampe and junior Brynn Shaw, finished in 40th and 46th place respectively. Krampe finished in a time of 30:57 and Shaw came in at a time of 35:26.

The Class 2 championships will take place at Jefferson City's Oak Hills Golf Center on Saturday. The Class 2 boys will start at 11:50 a.m. and the girls will begin at 1:05 p.m.

Hornets get lone qualifier for Class 3 cross country championships

MEXICO - The Hornets girls took seven competitors to the Class 3, District 5 race at Mexico High School on Saturday, with sophomore Jenny McCarty taking second place. With a time of 20:50, McCarty qualifed for state for a second straight year. Junior Kelley Oldani was the next Fulton finisher, coming in 21st with a time of 23:22.

A trio of Hornets seniors were the next to cross the line led by Courtney Johnson. Johnson notched a time of 23:37 to come in 24th, Jaena Smith finished 28th in a time of 23:55 and Brie Rohe posted a 33rd place time of 24:45.

Junior Mariah Gary came in 42nd place at 26:41 and Halie Burk was the final Fulton girl to cross, with a time of 27:06 to finish in 45th place. The Hornets girls finished in fifth place overall.

The boys team came in ninth place without a state qualifier. Senior Blake Calvin came in 39th place in a time of 20:37. Fellow senior Richard Gibson was 20 seconds behind in a time of 20:57 to come in 45th and junior Brian Crosby finished in 49th place in a time of 21:09.

Sophomore Josh Hurt had a 54th place result of 21:35 and freshman Keegan Stone was the final of 64 runners to finish in a time of 23:26 for Fulton.

The Class 3 state championships will be run at the Oak Hills Golf Center on Saturday. The girls race starts at 9:35 a.m.

BOONVILLE - The No. 3 seeded-Crusaders knocked in half of their goals in the game's first ten minutes to end the No. 2 seeded-Hornets season at 11-14.

"We played well but Helias was definitely the better team" Hornets coach Dave Milligan said.
