Hornet wrestlers bury Owls

The Fulton Hornets wrestling team - fueled by pinfall wins in seven weight classes - remained unbeaten Wednesday night after throttling Marshall 71-6 at Roger D. Davis Gymnasium.

With the romp, Fulton improved to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the North Central Missouri Conference.

"I was a little concerned before we even started, because we had a number of kids who were either sick or out, whether we had the numbers to compete well," Hornets head coach Eric Hudson said. "I told the kids that if they needed to get a (pin)fall, to get one, and we did that for the most part.

"I was fairly pleased with what I saw; the kids looked good."

Here are Wednesday night's individual results, by weight class:

•103 pounds: freshman Kory Masek (F) won by forfeit; 112: freshman Jared Kaiser (F) pinned Tyler Morrison (M) in :22; 119: open; 125: sophomore Cody Pae (F) defeated Brandon Standley (M) by 18-3 technical fall; 130: junior Zack McClure (F) pinned Canaan Heinzler (M) in 2:25;

•135: junior Mariah Gary (F) won by forfeit; 140: Jacob Ringlen (M) pinned sophomore Brian Dennison (F) in 5:24; 145: senior Josh Curtis (F) pinned Marc Plummer (M) in :45; 152: sophomore Drew Benner (F) won by forfeit; 160: freshman John Kingsley (F) pinned Austin Stickles (M) in 2:47;

Fulton took first place at the Camdenton Laker Invitational last Saturday, but only after Hudson discovered a 20-point error in the team totals on Monday.

The Hornets finished with 296.5 points, while Versailles came in second with 293.

Winning their respective weight classes for Fulton were McClure, Benner, Kingsley and Fritz.

Pae also posted a second-place finish, while sophomore Kelcey Nunley (135 pounds) and Books both came in third. Senior Sean Luetkemeyer finished fourth at 189 pounds.

The Hornets compete in the Spartan Duals at Moberly on Friday and Saturday.
