Members of the Riders in the Son, a newly organized Moberly chapter of the Christian Motorcyclists Association, volunteered their time Saturday to build a new room in the basement of Faith Maternity, 1900 Lake Dr. in Fulton.
Judy Lawrence, a house parent at the home for unwed young mothers, said she is delighted that the Christian-based motorcycle group volunteered to do the work.
The room will be used to store donated clothing to Faith Maternity. Lawrence said clothing not needed at the home is given to other charities.
Lawrence said young women living at the home earn "Mommie Bucks" through completion of training and other projects at the home. The "Mommie Bucks" are used to purchase the clothing.
Lawrence and her husband Charles are house parents at the home. Neena Lord is director of client services and H.C. Pennel is executive director of Faith Maternity.
Lawrence said the home now has two pregnant young women at the home and has room for four.
"We are interviewing other potential clients now and we expect to have all four spaces full by the end of February," Lawrence said.
Lawrence said most of their clients have decided not to marry and their parents have turned their backs on them.
She said the pregnant young women learn life skills such as how to get a job, set up an apartment and operate under a budget.
The girls stay at the home from six months to one year.
"We are a faith-based organization. We provide the girls their physical and spiritual needs," Lawrence said.
Lawrence said she was 15 years old and her husband was 18 when they were married. "That experience taught us a lot. We understand what the young women are facing, especially trying to cope on their own," Lawrence said.
She said the home they currently occupy was rented for a year but it was purchased after 10 people donated $1,000 each for a down payment to purchase the home.
"The house payment was less than the rent. Neighbors here have been very supportive and we haven't heard any negative comments," Lawrence said.
David Miller of Mexico, a member of the Riders in the Son Christian motorcycle organization who works at A.P. Green Refractories in Fulton, said he heard about the need for volunteer work at Faith Maternity.
"The Lord's work takes us all over," Miller said.
Joe Ginter of Moberly is president of the Moberly chapter.
Ginter said the organization welcomes anyone who wants to ride motorcycles with a Christian group.
The group sees its role as an evangelistic organization.
"Our main fundraiser for the Riders in the Son chapter in Moberly is an annual motorcycle run in Moberly on May 1," Miller said
