Recycle bin chic.
That's the theme of a special fashion show to be put on by Fulton High School's Peace Jam Club Tuesday.
The event, held in cooperation with Kingdom Projects, is a fundraiser for club members hoping to attend this year's Peace Jam Conference in Costa Rica.
According to club sponsor Jill Flakne, the inspiration for the fundraiser was a combination of this year's Peace Jam theme, and a proposal from Kingdom Projects to assist in its efforts to boost local recycling.
“My Peace Jam group works every year on a global issue, and our focus for the first part of this year is environmental degradation,” Flakne said. “At the same time, we're working to raise awareness about Fulton's curbside recycling program.
“We hope to have a lot of people come out and learn about recycling.”
Although she said many people think of recycled clothes as hand-me-downs, Flakne said here students have gotten creative - making clothing items out of recyclable items.
Juniors Abby and Jennifer Craighead both have spent the past couple of weeks working on a number of projects for the show.
“I made a belt out of cards, two gym bags out of tennis racket covers and a purse out of soda cans,” Jennifer Craighead said. “I'm looking forward to modeling the clothes - I think that'll be cool.”
Abby Craighead - who is making a purse out of an old pair of overalls - said she also is excited for her first stint as a model. More important, she said she hopes the group's show inspires area residents to be more conscientious about doing their part to help the environment.
“Recycling is free in Fulton, and you don't even have to sort it,” she said. “You just leave it at the curb and they do it for you.”
Held from 6-9 p.m. Tuesday in Westminster College's Mueller Student Center, the show also includes a live performance by local band Get Close, a display of recycling art and a raffle to win green products. Tickets to the event are $5 at the door.
Like Flakne, the girls said they are hoping for a big crowd Tuesday.
“I think it's just a really good event,” Jennifer Craighead said. “It's awareness, but it's going to be really cool, and something everyone can enjoy.
“Even if we only get a couple of people to (recycle) ... a little goes a long way.”
