A Westminster College administrator was seriously injured and his wife killed in a motorcycle accident Tuesday night in Miller County. The 87-year-old driver of a second vehicle also died.

David Humphrey, 51, director of the school's Center for Leadership and Service, and his wife Tempe, 44, were traveling east on Highway 54 on their 2002 Honda motorcycle when Eugene Faker pulled into their path at the Route AA intersection. The accident occurred at approximately 9:30 p.m. Tuesday.

“Another couple was riding with (the Humphreys), and when they went past the truck (Faker's 1998 Dodge), they saw him sitting on the right side of the road,” said Missouri State Highway Patrol Sgt. Paul Reinsch. “At some point after they went by, he pulled out and was hit by the second motorcycle.”

The MSHP said the Humphreys' motorcycle struck the driver's side of the truck. Faker was pronounced dead at University Hospital in Columbia.

Both David and Tempe Humphrey were transported by a Staff for Life helicopter to University Hospital, where Tempe Humphrey later was pronounced dead.

“It's a tragedy for us - to lose her and for him to be seriously injured,” said Pat Kirby, Westminster dean of enrollment services on Wednesday. “We all have our fingers crossed that he'll be able to recover.”

Kirby said a number of Westminster administrators were at the hospital Wednesday afternoon to offer support to the families. Kirby said he was told David Humphrey was in intensive care and that he may have suffered head injuries and broken bones.

Humphrey's friends and co-workers say he leads by example - always the first to offer a hand of service.

“He is so involved in the many community service projects the college undertakes,” said Westminster spokesperson Rob Crouse. “He is one of the driving forces behind those efforts.”

When he is not working, Courtney Swan - a friend and co-worker - said Humphrey looks to find ways to help others. In the past, he has helped new Westminster employees move into their homes and organized summer trips for international students.

“He's very fun-loving and easy-going,” Swan said. “He loves the blues - he even teaches a class on it.”

Friend Doc Kritzer said the Humphreys loved to travel on their motorcycle.

“They liked traveling around, even for a casual ride,” Kritzer said. “There is a peace, a freedom, a tremendous outlet in riding a motorcycle. Motorcycles are dangerous ... and a risk, but there's an enjoyment and a freedom in it.”

Humphrey began working at Westminster in 1980 as the director of financial aid. Twenty-six years later, he also has served as associate dean of admissions, dean of Student Life and director of the Hunter Activity Center.

Kirby said Tempe Humphrey also worked for Westminster in the late 1970s before spending 19 years at the Missouri Department of Transportation.

School officials sent an e-mail out to students and faculty on Wednesday to notify them of the accident.

“We're all praying for him,” Kirby said.
