Hot-hitting Lady Owls advance to AMC Tournament semifinals
By RYAN BOLAND
The Fulton Sun

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The William Woods University softball team profited from offensive excess on the first day of the American Midwest Conference Tournament.

No. 1 seed William Woods combined for 26 hits Thursday in a 6-0 first-round win over No. 8 Missouri Baptist University and a 5-2 quarterfinal victory over No. 4 Hannibal-LaGrange College.

The Lady Owls (41-11) - ranked No. 13 in the NAIA - move on to a semifinal showdown with No. 2 Columbia College at 2 p.m. today. The Cougars advanced with wins Thursday over No. 6 Harris-Stowe State College (3-0) and No. 2 McKendree (Ill.) College (2-1).

The loser drops into an elimination game at 6 tonight, while the winner moves on to the championship at noon Saturday. A second game, if necessary, would be at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Senior left fielder Kelly McClure went 2-for-4 with a two-run double and an RBI single to anchor William Woods' 14-hit barrage against Hannibal-LaGrange. Freshman center fielder TJ Quick - a Fulton graduate - also was 2-for-3 with a pair of singles and two runs scored.

The game was tied 2-2 before junior catcher Ashley Windmiller put the Lady Owls in front to stay with an RBI single in the fifth.

Sophomore right fielder Lynnzie Trustee also went 3-for-3 with three singles and an RBI for William Woods, while Windmiller and sophomore first baseman Melissa White both had two hits. Freshman shortstop Kendra Propst had a hit and scored two runs.

Owls freshman pitcher Jennifer Golden scattered five hits, struck out nine and walked none in going the distance for the victory. Both of Hannibal-LaGrange's runs were earned.

Senior pitcher Nicole Devenport turned in a dominating performance earlier Thursday for William Woods, limiting Missouri Baptist to just one hit in her complete-game shutout. Devenport recorded six strikeouts and only one walk.

White finished 2-for-3 with a solo home run and a single as the Lady Owls collected 12 hits, while McClure was 1-for-2 with a two-run double.

Trustee also went 3-for-4 with three singles and two runs scored, while junior second baseman Brooke Gastineau was 2-for-3 with a pair of singles and a run scored.

Quick drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and also had a bunt single and later scored on an error. Junior third baseman Lindsey Skwira contributed an RBI single.
